Objective: describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients undergoing treatment for Peritoneal Dialysis. Method: this is an exploratory, descriptive and quantitative study. The sample consisted of 35 patients from three Clinical Dialysis in Fortaleza, CE. Patients were on peritoneal dialysis for at least a year, aged 18 years and ability to understand and verbal communication. Data were collected between February and March 2009 using a questionnaire covering sociodemographic and clinical aspects. The study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the University of Fortaleza under number 004/2009. Results: prevalence of the following characteristics: female (60%); 50-59 years (31.4%); married (54.3%); incomplete primary education (37.1%); without paid work (85.7% ); family income up to a minimum wage (68.6%); living in Fortaleza (74.3%); Diabetes mellitus as major cause of chronic renal failure (37.1%); Lack of Vascular Access as motivation for entering in peritoneal dialysis (45,7%). Conclusion: the results may serve to direct actions and the improvement of nursing care, as well as a basis for future studies in this area.
