Objective : to identify the epidemiological profile of infants admitted to the neonatal unit of a public hospital in the municipal district of Caruaru/PE, in 2008. Method : a descriptive, exploratory, retrospective, transversal and quantitative study. Composed of medical records of children born in the maternity and admitted to the neonatal unit, making 515 medical records. In the collection, it was used a formulary containing the following variables: birth weight, Apgar, gestational age, type of delivery, reason for admission and discharged and the mother’s age and level of education. Data were tabulated using EPI-INFO 6.04d and statistically analyzed. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Caruaruense Association of Higher Education, protocol 136/09. Results : among the pregnants, 60% was between 20-34 years and 68,7% have not completed elementary school. The number of cesarean deliveries (45,2%) was higher than the 15% recommended by WHO. Most pregnancies (51,1%) did not reach 37 weeks and 48,8% with low birth weight, the main reason for admission was prematurity, associated with low birth weight and respiratory discomfort syndrome (17,3%), and neonatal mortality rate was 7,7%. Conclusion: adequate prenatal care, assistance systematic nursing and a good structure of the service are essential to reduce these rates. RESUMO : Objetivo : identificar perfil epidemiologico dos recem-nascidos admitidos na unidade neonatal de uma maternidade publica no municipio de Caruaru/PE, em 2008. Metodo : estudo descritivo, exploratorio, retrospectivo, transversal e quantitativo. Composto por prontuarios das criancas nascidas na maternidade e admitidas na unidade neonatal, constituindo 515 prontuarios. Na coleta, utilizou-se formulario contendo as variaveis: peso ao nascer, Apgar, idade gestacional, tipo de parto, motivo da internacao e alta, alem da idade e grau de instrucao materna. Os dados foram tabulados no software EPI-INFO 6.04d e analisados estatisticamente. O estudo teve aprovacao do Comite de Etica em Pesquisa da Associacao Caruaruense de Ensino Superior, protocolo 136/09. Resultados : das gestantes, 60% estavam entre 20 e 34 anos e 68,7% nao concluiram o ensino fundamental. O numero de partos cesareos (45,2%) foi superior aos 15% preconizado pela OMS. A maioria das gestacoes (51,1%) nao atingiu o termo e 48,8% nasceram com baixo peso, o principal motivo de internacao foi a prematuridade, associada ao baixo peso e sindrome do desconforto respiratorio (17,3%) e o coeficiente de mortalidade neonatal foi de 7,7%. Conclusao : um adequado pre-natal, uma assistencia sistematizada de enfermagem e uma boa estruturacao do servico sao fundamentais para reducao desses indices. RESUMEN Objetivo : identificar perfil epidemiologico de los recien nacidos admitidos en la unidad Neonatal de una Maternidad Publica del Municipio de Caruaru/PE, en 2008 . Metodo : estudio descriptivo, exploratorio, retrospectivo, transversal y cuantitativo. Compuesto de manuales de ninos nacidos en la Maternidad y admitidos en la unidad neonatal, constituyendo 515 manuales. En la colecta, se utilizo formularios conteniendo las variables: peso al nacer, Apgar, edad gestacional, tipo de parto, motivo de internacion y alta, entre otras. Los datos fueron tabulados en el software EPI-INFO 6.04d y estadisticamente analizados. El estudio tubo aprobacion del Comite de Etica en Pesquisa de la Asociacion Caruaruense de Ensenanza Superior, protocolo 136/09. Resultados : las gestantes, 60% estan entre 20-34 anos y 68,7% no concluyeron la ensenanza fundamental. El numero de partos cesareos (45,2%) fue superior a los 15% alegados por la OMS. La mayoria de las gestaciones (51,1%) no alcanzo el termino y 48,8% nacieron con bajo peso, el principal motivo de internacion es por prematuro, asociado con bajo peso y sindrome de incomodidad para respirar (17,3%), el coeficiente de mortalidad neonatal fue del 7,7%. Conclusion : un adecuado pre-natal, una asistencia sistematizada de enfermeria y una buena estructuracion de los servicios, son fundamentales para reduccion de esos indices.
