A joint interpretation of geological evidence, new seismic tomographic inversions, and seismicity obser- vations suggest that the SE-Carpathians are the site of an on-going plate break-off process after subduction and col- lision ceased 10 million years ago. A high-velocity body clearly visible between 70 and 350 km depth hosts in its up- per part (<200 km) the intermediate-depth strong seismicity. Its deeper aseismic part provides the gravitational pull to gen- erate the necessary high-shear stresses.
