Transpiration is commonly conceptualised as a fraction of some potential\udrate, driven by so-called "atmospheric evaporative demand". Therefore,\udatmospheric evaporative demand or "potential evaporation" is generally used\udalongside with precipitation and soil moisture to characterise the\udenvironmental conditions that affect plant water use. Consequently, an\udincrease in potential evaporation (e.g. due to climate change) is believed to\udcause increased transpiration and/or vegetation water stress. In the present\udstudy, we investigated the question whether potential evaporation constitutes\uda meaningful reference for transpiration and compared sensitivity of\udpotential evaporation and leaf transpiration to atmospheric forcing. A\udphysically-based leaf energy balance model was used, considering the\uddependence of feedbacks between leaf temperature and exchange rates of\udradiative, sensible and latent heat on stomatal resistance. Based on\udmodelling results and supporting experimental evidence, we conclude that\udstomatal resistance cannot be parameterised as a factor relating\udtranspiration to potential evaporation, as the ratio between transpiration\udand potential evaporation not only varies with stomatal resistance, but also\udwith wind speed, air temperature, irradiance and relative humidity.\udFurthermore, the effect of wind speed in particular implies increase in\udpotential evaporation, which is commonly interpreted as increased "water\udstress", but at the same time can reduce leaf transpiration, implying a\uddecrease in water demand at leaf scale
