The effects of the spatiotemporal evolution of failure thresholdheterogeneity on the dynamics of fault criticality, and thus on regionalseismogenesis, have attracted strong interest in the field of regionalseismotectonics. The heterogeneity might be a manifestation of themacroscopic distribution and multiscale strength variation of asperities,the distinct regional stress level, and (microscopically) heterogeneousfault surface roughness or friction regimes. In this study, rather thanattempting to mimic the complex microscale slipping physics on a faultsurface, sandpile cellular automata were implemented with a straightforwardtoppling rule. The objective is to examine the influence of distinctconfigurations of the embedded heterogeneous toppling threshold field on theglobal system avalanche event statistics. The examination results revealedthat increasing the coverage extent and decreasing the compactness of theheterogeneous failure threshold, rather than the magnitude, range ofcontrast, diversity, or the geometric configuration of the thresholdheterogeneity, leads to a systematic increase in the scaling exponent of theavalanche event power law statistics, implying the importance of mutualinteraction among toppling sites with distinct thresholds. For tectonic provinces with differing stress regimes evolvingspatio temporally, it is postulatedthat the distinct extent and compactness of the heterogeneousfailure threshold are critical factors that manifest in the reported dynamicvariations of seismicity scaling
