. We communicate the results of a preliminary investigation aimed atimproving a state-of-the-art RSLEWS (regional-scale landslide earlywarning system) based on rainfall thresholds by integrating meansoil moisture values averaged over the territorial units of thesystem. We tested two approaches. The simplest can be easily appliedto improve other RSLEWS: it is based on a soil moisture thresholdvalue under which rainfall thresholds are not used becauselandslides are not expected to occur. Another approach deeplymodifies the original RSLEWS: thresholds based on antecedentrainfall accumulated over long periods are substituted with soilmoisture thresholds. A back analysis demonstrated that bothapproaches consistently reduced false alarms, while the secondapproach reduced missed alarms as well.

Brief communication: Using averaged soil moisture estimates to improve the performances of a regional-scale landslide early warning system
