Watershed health, including the natural environment, hydrology, water\udquality, and aquatic ecology, is assessed for the Han River basin\ud(34 148 km<sup>2</sup>) in South Korea by using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool\ud(SWAT). The evaluation procedures follow those of the Healthy Watersheds\udAssessment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Six components\udof the watershed landscape are examined to evaluate the watershed health\ud(basin natural capacity): stream geomorphology, hydrology, water quality,\udaquatic habitat condition, and biological condition. In particular, the SWAT\udis applied to the study basin for the hydrology and water-quality components,\udincluding 237 sub-watersheds (within a standard watershed on the Korea\udHydrologic Unit Map) along with three multipurpose dams, one hydroelectric\uddam, and three multifunction weirs. The SWAT is calibrated (2005–2009) and\udvalidated (2010–2014) by using each dam and weir operation, the flux-tower\udevapotranspiration, the time-domain reflectometry (TDR) soil moisture, and\udgroundwater-level data for the hydrology assessment, and by using sediment,\udtotal phosphorus, and total nitrogen data for the water-quality assessment.\udThe water balance, which considers the surface–groundwater interactions and\udvariations in the stream-water quality, is quantified according to the\udsub-watershed-scale relationship between the watershed hydrologic cycle and\udstream-water quality. We assess the integrated watershed health according to\udthe U.S. EPA evaluation process based on the vulnerability levels of the\udnatural environment, water resources, water quality, and ecosystem\udcomponents. The results indicate that the watershed's health declined during\udthe most recent 10-year period of 2005–2014, as indicated by the worse\udresults for the surface process metric and soil water dynamics compared to\udthose of the 1995–2004 period. The integrated watershed health tended to\uddecrease farther downstream within the watershed
