Eruption source parameters (ESP) characterizingvolcanic eruption plumes are crucial inputs for atmospherictephra dispersal models, used for hazard assessment andrisk mitigation.We present FPLUME-1.0, a steady-state 1-D(one-dimensional) cross-section-averaged eruption columnmodel based on the buoyant plume theory (BPT). The modelaccounts for plume bending by wind, entrainment of ambientmoisture, effects of water phase changes, particle fallout andre-entrainment, a new parameterization for the air entrainmentcoefficients and a model for wet aggregation of ash particlesin the presence of liquid water or ice. In the occurrenceof wet aggregation, the model predicts an effective grain sizedistribution depleted in fines with respect to that erupted atthe vent. Given a wind profile, the model can be used to determinethe column height from the eruption mass flow rate orvice versa. The ultimate goal is to improve ash cloud dispersalforecasts by better constraining the ESP (column height,eruption rate and vertical distribution of mass) and the effectiveparticle grain size distribution resulting from eventualwet aggregation within the plume. As test cases we apply themodel to the eruptive phase-B of the 4 April 1982 El Chichónvolcano eruption (México) and the 6 May 2010 Eyjafjallajökulleruption phase (Iceland). The modular structure of thecode facilitates the implementation in the future code versionsof more quantitative ash aggregation parameterizationas further observations and experiment data will be availablefor better constraining ash aggregation processes
