. Forest fires modify soil organic carbon and suppress soil respirationfor many decades after the initial disturbance. The associated changesin soil autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration from the time of theforest fire, however, are less well characterized. The FireResp modelpredicts soil autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration parameterizedwith a novel dataset across a fire chronosequence in the Yukon andNorthwest Territories of Canada. The dataset consisted of soilincubation experiments and field measurements of soil respiration andsoil carbon stocks. The FireResp model contains submodels that considera Q10 (exponential) model of respiration compared to models ofheterotrophic respiration using Michaelis–Menten kinetics parameterizedwith soil microbial carbon. For model evaluation we applied the Akaikeinformation criterion and compared predicted patterns in components ofsoil respiration across the chronosequence. Parameters estimated withdata from the 5 cm soil depth had better model–data comparisons thanparameters estimated with data from the 10 cm soil depth. The model–datafit was improved by including parameters estimated from soil incubationexperiments. Models that incorporated microbial carbon withMichaelis–Menten kinetics reproduced patterns in autotrophic andheterotrophic soil respiration components across the chronosequence.Autotrophic respiration was associated with aboveground tree biomass atmore recently burned sites, but this association was less robust atolder sites in the chronosequence. Our results provide support for morestructured soil respiration models than standard Q10 exponentialmodels.
