. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are produced by alllife forms. Their release into the atmosphere is important with regards to anumber of climate-related physical and chemical processes and great efforthas been put into determining sources and sinks of these compounds in recentyears. Soil microbes have beensuggested as a possible sink for BVOCs in the atmosphere; however, experimental evidence for this sink is scarce despite itspotentially high importance to both carbon cycling and atmosphericconcentrations of these gases. We therefore conducted a study with a numberof commonly occurring BVOCs labelled with 14 C and modified existingmethods to study the mineralization of these compounds to 14 CO 2 in fourdifferent topsoils. Five of the six BVOCs were rapidly mineralized bymicrobes in all soils. However, great differences were observed with regardsto the speed of mineralization, extent of mineralization and variation betweensoil types. Methanol, benzaldehyde, acetophenone and the oxygenatedmonoterpene geraniol were mineralized within hours in all soils. Thehydrocarbon monoterpene p -cymene was mineralized rapidly in soil from aconiferous forest but was mineralized slower in soil from an adjacent beech stand, whilechloroform was mineralized slowly in all soils. From our study it is clearthat soil microbes are able to completely degrade BVOCs released byabove-ground vegetation as well as BVOCs released by soil microbes and plantroots. In addition to the possible atmospheric implications of thisdegradation, the very fast mineralization rates are likely important inshaping the net BVOC emissions from soil and it is possible that BVOCformation and degradation may be important but little-recognized parts ofinternal carbon cycling in soil.
