The availability of measurements of the geomagnetic field variations inAntarctica at three sites along the 80° S geomagnetic parallel,separated by approximately 1 h in magnetic local time, allows us to study thelongitudinal dependence of the observed variations. In particular, using1 min data from Mario Zucchelli Station, Scott Base and Talos Dome, atemporary installation during 2007–2008 Antarctic campaign, we investigatedthe diurnal variation and the low-frequency fluctuations (approximately inthe Pc5 range, ∼ 1–7 mHz). We found that the daily variation isclearly ordered by local time, suggesting a predominant effect of the polarextension of midlatitude ionospheric currents. On the other hand, thepulsation power is dependent on magnetic local time maximizing aroundmagnetic local noon, when the stations are closer to the polar cusp, whilethe highest coherence between pairs of stations is observed in the magneticlocal nighttime sector. The wave propagation direction observed duringselected events, one around local magnetic noon and the other around localmagnetic midnight, is consistent with a solar-wind-driven source in thedaytime and with substorm-associated processes in thenighttime
