Electron beams narrowlycollimated to the magnetic field line were observed continuously from adown-ward current region to an auroral acceleration region (i.e., upward currentregion). They were well correlated with low-frequency electric fieldfluctuations in the auroral acceleration region as well as in the adjacentdownward current region. Magnetic field fluctuations were found only in thedownward current region. The analysis suggests that static field-alignedelectric fields are not fully responsible for the filed-aligned electronacceleration; the ac electric field, presumably associated with Alfvenicfluctuations, should also be involved in the acceleration of ionosphericelectrons.  <b>Key words. </b>Ionosphere (particleacceleration) – Magnetospheric physics (auroral phenomena;magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions
