This paper describes a comprehensive observational filter forsatellite infrared limb sounding of gravity waves. The filterconsiders instrument visibility and observation geometry with a highlevel of accuracy. It contains four main processes: visibility filter,projection of the wavelength on the tangent-point track, aliasingeffect, and calculation of the observed vertical wavelength. Theobservation geometries of the SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere usingBroadband Emission Radiometry) and HIRDLS (High Resolution DynamicsLimb Sounder) are mimicked. Gravity waves (GWs) simulated by couplinga convective GW source (CGWS) scheme and the gravity wave regional orglobal ray tracer (GROGRAT) are used as an example for applying theobservational filter. Simulated spectra in terms of horizontal andvertical wave numbers (wavelengths) of gravity wave momentum flux(GWMF) are analyzed under the influence of the filter. We find thatthe most important processes, which have significant influence on thespectrum are the visibility filter (for both SABER and HIRDLS observationgeometries) and aliasing for SABER and projection on tangent-point trackfor HIRDLS. The vertical wavelength distribution is mainly affected bythe retrieval as part of the "visibility filter" process. Inaddition, the short-horizontal-scale spectrum may be projected forsome cases into a longer horizontal wavelength interval whichoriginally was not populated. The filter largely reduces GWMF valuesof very short horizontal wavelength waves. The implications forinterpreting observed data are discussed
