. The NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory serves as the WorldMeteorological Organization Global Atmosphere Watch (WMO/GAW) CentralCalibration Laboratory (CCL) for CO 2 and is responsible for maintainingthe WMO/GAW mole fraction scale used as a reference within the WMO/GAWprogram. The current WMO-CO 2 -X2007 scale is embodied by 15 aluminumcylinders containing modified natural air, with CO 2 mole fractionsdetermined using the NOAA manometer from 1995 to 2006. We have made twominor corrections to historical manometric records: fixing an error in theapplied second virial coefficient of CO 2 and accounting for loss of asmall amount of CO 2 to materials in the manometer during themeasurement process. By incorporating these corrections, extending themeasurement records of the original 15 primary standards through 2015, andadding four new primary standards to the suite, we define a new scale,identified as WMO-CO 2 -X2019. The new scale is 0.18  µ mol mol −1 (ppm) greater than the previous scale at 400 ppm CO 2 . While thisdifference is small in relative terms (0.045 %), it is significant interms of atmospheric monitoring. All measurements of tertiary-levelstandards will be reprocessed to WMO-CO 2 -X2019. The new scale is moreinternally consistent than WMO-CO 2 -X2007 owing to revisions inpropagation and should result in an overall improvement in atmospheric datarecords traceable to the CCL.
