Aerosol samples were collected by aircraft duringthe summer of 2004 in the Northeastern Pacific  andcompared to measurements ofaerosol hygroscopicity.  Chemical speciation analyses of the samples revealed that a significant portionof the marine aerosols was organic, and on average 8% of the totalaerosol mass was insoluble organic material, tentatively attributed to naturalmarine emissions.Two chemical models were explored in an attempt to achieve closurebetween the marine aerosol chemical and physical properties throughreproduction of theobserved aerosol growth, both in the subsaturated andsupersaturated regimes.  Results suggest that at subsaturated relativehumidities, the nonideal behavior of water activity with respect toaerosol chemistry has an important effect on aerosol growth.  Atsupersaturations, the underprediction of critical supersaturations byall models suggests the hypothesis that formation of a completemonolayer by the insoluble organics may inhibit the activation ofaerosols to form cloud droplets
