(Manuscript submitted February 10, 2003; accepted April 8, 2003) Abstract Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) based an 1-alkyl-3-methylimidawlium have air and water stability and favorable viscosity and density as solvent. Furthermore, some of them are immiscible with water and have possibility to be used as solvents far liquid-liquid extraction. We investgated possible use of a RTIL, 1-butyl3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [bmim][PF6], as solvent far chelate extraction of divalent transition metal rations. From comparison with nitrobenzene and chloroform, it was found that [bmim][PF6] as chelate extraction solvent behaves as if it were extremely polar organic solvent.
