Phosphate ion at the levels of sub microgram per liter were converted to hydrophobic species and this species was retained on a membrane after filtration under reduced pressure by a hydrophobic interaction between the species, ion pair or ion associate, and the membrane material, respectively. The color of the species on the membrane was measured directly by portable tristimulus colorimeter driven by dry cell battery. For the quantification of these components, a tristimulus chromaticity diagram based on the L a b system was utilized; the measured difference of the color corresponded to the quantity of the components on the membrane filter. Though the working curve was nonlinear, this method was highly sensitive (determination limit was 0.1μg dm-3, sample volume was 50cm3) and the procedure was simple and rapid, required no organic solvent. This method has exhibited high potentials from the view point of Green Chemistry and Zero-emission Chemistry.
