The Otto cycle direct injection engine has the advantage of lower fuel consumption compared to conventional indirect injection engines. However the disadvantage of such engines is the higher level of particulate matter emissions formed due to an inhomogeneous mixture of air and fuel in the combustion process. The fuel composition and the engine technology play an important role on the particulate matter emissions, as well. Particulate matter affects the human health causing respiratory problems. In the year 2013, the Brazilian automotive industry presented the first flexfuel direct injection engine. The objective of this research was to evaluate the particulate emissions provided by a direct injection flexfuel light-duty vehicle.
