ln estuarine zones,ponuary works need an indepth study of the fine sediments which are sometimes stratified. Such sediments are present in the Loire estuary particularly in the industrial zones of Montoir-de-Bretagne, which are buiLt on ancient mud flats which have been fiUed with sand. These sediments are subjected to heavy charges due to the loads effects at the wharfs which produce failures of the underlying stratified sediments. ' Maritime works oone on the Loire estuary have provided us with a good knowledge of the underlying geology. The origin of the geological materiaL lies in the overdigging of the rock riverbed during the Preflandrien regression and the infilling by recent sediments during the FLandrientransgression. These sediments, locaUy calIed "Jalle" are made up of clays, about one centimeter of thickness, interbedded with very fine sands and sUts, of millimeter thickness. This marerial is weIl known Locally, on the one handfor its resistance to hydraulic dredging and on the other hand for its ambiguous response to geophysical studies. The physico-chemicaL characteristics of the mechanical behavior are studied by in-situ and Iaboratory experiments. Inpite of the dijJerences in struetüre due to its heterogeneity, this material behaves mechanically like a homogeneous clay.
