Constructing ontologies from relational databases is an active research topicin the Semantic Web domain. While conceptual mapping rules/principles ofrelational databases and ontology structures are being proposed, severalsoftware modules or plug-ins are being developed to enable the automaticconversion of relational databases into ontologies. However, the correlationbetween the resulting ontologies built automatically with plug-ins fromrelational databases and the database-to-ontology mapping principles has beengiven little attention. This study reviews and applies two Prot\'eg\'eplug-ins, namely, DataMaster and OntoBase to automatically construct ontologiesfrom a relational database. The resulting ontologies are further analysed tomatch their structures against the database-to-ontology mapping principles. Acomparative analysis of the matching results reveals that OntoBase outperformsDataMaster in applying the database-to-ontology mapping principles forautomatically converting relational databases into ontologies.
