electron beam passing through a slow wave structure is unstable to an electromagnetic perturbation whose phase velocity equals the velocity of the beam. This phenomenon of cerenkov emission is the basis of all slow wave devices. The increase in the growth rate by using a pre-bunched electron beam in a Cerenkov free electron laser (CFEL) and Free electron laser (FEL) has been studied. We have compared the increase in growth rate with the increase in modulation index calculated at experimentally known CFEL and FEL parameters.
