鼻咽腔閉鎖不全 (特に後天性) に対する新しい手術法として, 口蓋咽頭側面縫縮術を考案し, 良好な結果を得た.その要旨は, 粘膜切除をした後口蓋弓と軟口蓋の一部を上咽頭収縮筋下にはさみ込んで, 縫着固定することで鼻咽腔の面積および, 軟口蓋と咽頭後壁の距離を短縮させる.この条件下で残存する鼻咽腔閉鎖機構を利用して鼻咽腔閉鎖を得ようとするものである.ただし, あらかじめ術前に後口蓋弓と軟口蓋を接子で圧排して, 非鼻声を発声させたとき, および嚥下時に鼻咽腔閉鎖が改善するかを, 鼻咽腔ファイバースコープ下に観察する必要がある.あわせて, 開鼻声が改善するかも聴覚印象的に判定する.また, どの範囲までを圧排すれば有効か圧排しすぎて鼻咽腔が安静時にも閉鎖してしまうという可能性についても計測, 確認しておく.本法の術後, 鼻咽腔閉鎖機能は全例とも改善した.
