The present study was performed in order to investigate the speech of 30 children (mean age 9 years) using audiograms of so-called sharp-cut configuration. The subjects were divided into -three groupsI (1000Hz), II (2000Hz), III (4000Hz) according to the first frequency of sharp sloping. The speech samples used for this study were a sentence passage read by the subjects and by 10 normal hearing children and recorded on magnetic tape. Data obtained by psychometric procedure were analyzed using canonical and factor analyses. The results of these analyses showed that group III and the normally hearing group were clearly distinguished in terms of the first canonical variables. That is, even high-tone loss seemed to affect the learning of speech and language. These results were sufficient to classify all of the hearing-impaired into three groups by the first and second factors, for which •gclosed voices•h contributed to the maximum extent.
