Summary Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is important as a precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA), which has recently been rapidly increasing in incidence in the Western world. The absolute risk in individual patients with reflux esophagitis is less than 1 in 1000 per annum. 1 In the United States, the annual incidence of EA in Caucasian men is 3.6/100,000 compared to 0.8 in African American men and 0.3 in Caucasian women. 2 The incidence of EA will be expected to increase as the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease increases in the Republic of Korea.
