The patterns of signal intensity inside of bone and soft tissues were investigated with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Seventeen patients with bone tumor and the same number or patients with soft tissue tumors were examined with a Signa 1.5tesla superconducting magnet. MRI findings which would indicate malignancy of the tumors were as follows : 1) when bleeding and necrosis were found in tumors, 2) when extraosseous extension of bone timors was found in T2 weighed image and 3) a reactive zone which is shown in T2 weighed image. Cartilagenous tumors tended to show high signal intensity in T2 weighed image. Tissues which showed low signal intensity were as follows: 1) tissues containing a lot of collagens such as desmold, fibrosis in tumors and tumor capsule, 2) parts ,of the tumors containing hemosiderin pigmentations in pigmented villonodular synovitis and giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath. Lipogenic tumors showed similsr high signal intensity to that of subcutaneous fat both in T1 and T2 weighed images. AV malformation showed a high signal intensity in T2 weighed image because of the rapid blood flow in tumor tissues. These results should be helpful for the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors.
