The present article deals with one of the classic books of Western political thought – The prince – for the occasion of its five hundred years, depicting its importance and contemporaneity concerning the political-constitutional process. It deals with a bibliographical study The prince and works of Machiavelli’s detractors and commentators -, intending to show, namely, one of the most important concepts of the work of the Florentine thinker, the concept of “good laws” and the implicit idea of constituent power. “Good laws” is a recurrent argument of Machiavelli, as the mechanism that, together with the “good arms”, provides the conservation of the States. It explores the relation between Politics and Law in The Prince, considering the autonomy of politics, the formation of the modern State, and the political-constitutional dimension in the evolution of the State. As the principal conclusion, it emphasizes the interpellation that The Prince currently causes.
