Neste artigo, pretendemos comparar as ideias de Vico e Rousseau sobre as relações entre linguagem e história. São identificadas semelhanças entre os autores, como a primazia da metáfora na origem da linguagem e a correlação entre fases históricas e fases das línguas. No entanto, ao contrário de Rousseau, Vico tenta combinar seu historicismo com a hipótese de um dicionário mental universal
