of all pregnancies.1 Minor degrees of placental abruption will lead to minimal signs and symptoms in the form of slight vaginal bleeding, vague abdominal pain, and preterm labor pains. More extensive placental separation leads to fetal distress and even fetal demise. In worse scenarios, it may be associated with maternal decompensation in the form of hypotensive shock, postpartum hemorrhage leading to anemia, blood transfusions, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and even maternal death. Placental abruption is most frequently observed during the 24th to 26th weeks of pregnancy, decreasing in frequency thereafter. Onset before 20 weeks of pregnancy is very rare.2 Similarly, abruption as the end result of chronic inflammatory process starting early in pregnancy is in itself a rare entity. Here, we report a rare case of chronic abruption presenting with 16 weeks of gestation associated with severe anemia.
