A theoretical analysis of the conditions for bedform development in a turbulent open channel flow over a movable bed is presented. A general methodology for the linear stability analysis of the equations governing flow and sediment transport is revised. This methodology is applied to the analysis of bar and dune/antidune formation. The analysis predicts that bar development is mainly controlled by the channel width to height of flow ratio. As this ratio increases, the structures selected are increasingly more complex, starting with alternate bars and followed by double bars, triple bars, etc., which have decreasing values of the wavelength. In all these cases bars migrate in the downstream direction. The analysis also shows that the dune/antidune formation depends mainly on the Froude number of the flow. Dunes are formed in subcritical flows, and always migrate in the downstream direction. Antidunes emerge in supercritical flows and can migrate in both the upstream and downstream directions. In the vicinity of the critical flow the stability analysis predicts a flat bed with no bedforms.
