The paper addresses the character Carl Winter, featured in O Continente, the first part of the trilogy O Tempo e o Vento (1962), written by Erico Verissimo. The theory of de character (CANDIDO, 1998; BRAIT, 1999) underlies the analysis, complemented by critical studies by Chaves (1976; 1994; 2001; 2006), Bordini (1995), Vellinho (2001), Zilberman (2004), among others, and by the historiography of Rio Grande do Sul (CÉSAR, 1971; FLORES, 1988; HOHLFELDT, 1998; REVERBEL, 1996), establishing a relationship between Literature and History. In the construction of the character, the perspective of a foreigner, doctor by profession, belonging to european culture are narrative resources employed by the writer to present a critical view of 19th century Rio Grande do Sul society.
