In this study, the dust removal efficiency from polluted air was investigated using an electrostatic precipitator, which was equipped with alternation of activated carbon coated electrodes and dielectric panels, without corona discharge process. The mixture of activated carbon and organic binder, poly vinyl acetate (PVAc), was coated onto stainless steel sheets to produce an activated carbon coated electrode. The attached activated carbon on stainless steel sheet exhibited 80% BET surface area of the powdered activated carbon. It was verified that the pore characteristics were still maintained without altering its hardness. It was confirmed by keeping the activated carbon coated electrodes in the atmosphere as well as in water for a prolonged period of time. In addition, a pilot plant scale electrostatic precipitator was fabricated, by alternately inserting activated carbon coated electrodes and dielectric panels to measure the removal efficiency of dust particles. Regardless of the concentration of the incoming dust, electrostatic precipitator discharged a very low concentration of dust and the removal efficiency was consistent. The high dust removal efficiency was observed when the voltage applied was 5 to 8 kV, and the higher the voltage applied, the higher was the removal efficiency. The dust removal efficiency was measured at different linear velocities. About 98% removal was recorded at 10 cm/s, and the removal efficiency decreased when the linear velocity was increased. The adsorption pattern of attached dust to the electrode and dielectric panels was identified. About 70% of the total absorbed dust was collected in the first stage cage and the dust was evenly adsorbed onto the electrode and dielectric panel. The electrostatic precipitator developed in this study showed a high dust removal efficiency as the dust detachment by discharge was not occurred.
