白ネズミを4群にわけて, ヨウ素の出納試験を実施したところ, 著しい外観上の異常は認められなかったが, ヨウ素欠乏群の甲状腺に肥大と出血様な症状がみられた。ヨウ素の摂取量と尿中排泄量, および1日全尿中のヨウ素量と尿1ml当たりのヨウ素のクレアチニン比の間には高い正の相関があることがわかり, ヨウ素摂取量の適否判定に, 尿1ml中のヨウ素と総クレアチニンの比〔 (ヨウ素mg/ml) / (総クレアチニンg/ml) 〕を利用することの妥当性を認めることができた。また, ヨウ素の不足は, 血中のコレステロール含量や, 体内でのビタミン利用能に影響がほとんどないこともわかった。
