大麦若葉不溶性食物繊維濃縮品 (BDFC) が盲腸内短鎖脂肪酸や糞排泄に及ぼす影響についてラットを用いた動物試験により調べた。対照飼料はセルロースパウダー5%を, 他の実験飼料はBDFC4.7, 7.8, 15.7%, 食物繊維としてそれぞれ3, 5, 10%を含有するものとし, これらの飼料をラットに4週間摂取させた。盲腸内容物の酪酸濃度において4.7%BDFC群と対照群との間で有意差がみられたが, 糞中の各短鎖脂肪酸濃度と総短鎖脂肪酸濃度, 盲腸内容物の重量およびpHは4飼料群間で有意差がなかった。BDFC添加群において糞乾重量と消化管通過時間との間に有意な負の相関 (r=-0.518, p=0.002) がみられた。また, 糞の湿重量, 乾重量いずれも7.8%BDFC群および15.7%BDFC群が対照群よりも有意に高値を示し, BDFC添加群において糞の湿重量, 乾重量はそれぞれ用量依存的に (r=0.885, p<0.001, r=0.973, p<0.001) 増加が認められた。このようなBDFCを摂取した場合の糞排泄量増加と便通改善は, 含有する不溶性食物繊維によるものと考えられた。
