Tetrastichus howardi (Olliff, 1893) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a parasitoid of larvae and pupae of insects, especially Lepidoptera, and is considered a promising biological control agent. The development of breeding techniques is of crucial importance for the implementation and enhancement of biological control programs using natural enemies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the age of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) pupae on the parasitism and development of T. howardi. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five treatments and five replications, each represented by a group of ten pupae of D. saccharalis individualized, totaling 50 pupae per treatment. Pupae of D. saccharalis with 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h old were exposed to parasitism by three females of T. howardi in glass tubes (10 × 1.5 cm). The females of T. howardi were removed after 24 h and the pupae were kept at 25±2 °C, 70±10% relative humidity (RH), and photoperiod of 14 h. The number of parasitized pupae, the emergence and progeny of T. howardi in pupae of D. saccharalis were not influenced by host age, but the life cycle of T. howardi was lower in 24 h-old pupae and higher in 120 h-old pupae. In general, pupae of D. saccharalis aged between 24 and 120 h are suitable for the breeding of the parasitoid T. howardi in laboratory.
