In South Africa, the collection of these two types of leafy vegetables from the wild, or from cultivated fields where s omeofthemgrowasweeds,hasalonghistorythathasbeenintimatelylinkedtowomenandtheirtraditionallivelihood tasks.Amongpoorpeopleinremoteruralareastheuseofthesetypesofleafyvegetablesisstillcommonbutnationwidethere isevidenceofdecline,particularlyinurbanareas.Cultivationofindigenousorindigenisedleafyvegetablesisrestrictedto anarrowgroupofprimarilyindigenisedspeciesinSouthAfrica.SevengroupsofindigenousorindigenisedAfricanleafy vegetablesthatareimportantinSouthAfricaweregivenspecialattentionandtheirlocalnomenclature,ecology,useand cultivationarediscussed.
