Grandparents are family members and form an importantelement of the extended family. In traditional cultures,grandparents often have a direct and clear role in relation tothe care and nurture of children. This has tended to be lostwith the development of the nuclear family. In cases wherethe parents are not willing or unable to provide adequatecare for their children, grandparents may take on the roleof primary caregivers. In traditional East Asian culturesinfluenced by Confucianism, filial piety is one of the highestmoral values. Grandparents usually exercise their authorityon family matters, and their descendants should obey theirseniors.
