The epicenter of the disastrous earthquake of 1861 (Bunkyu 1) and the intensity distribution of the earthquake of 1900 (Meiji 33) occurred in the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture have been studied from many data including newly collected documents. The results are as follows. 1. The epicenter of the disastrous earthquake of 1861 has been estimated to be off Miyagi Prefecture from the following reasons. 1) The area of intensity five in JMA scale extends to the south-eastern part of Iwate Prefecture. The area of intensity five of the 1900 earthquake is, however, limited to the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture. 2) Notable damages at Sendai and Ishinomaki are well explained, if we assume that the earthquake has occurred off Miyagi Prefecture. 2. More precise intensity distribution of the earthquake of 1900 has been obtained from the study of articles of local newspapers as well as official reports published immediately after the earthquake. The area of intensity five in JMA scale is significantly different from the intensity distributions reported by the former investigations.
