This paper presents research into a novel autoselective\udelectric discharge method for regenerating monolithic\udwall flow diesel particulate filters using low power over\udthe entire range of temperatures and oxygen\udconcentrations experienced within the exhaust systems\udof modern diesel engines. The ability to regenerate the\udfilter independently of exhaust gas temperature and\udcomposition significantly reduces system complexity\udcompared to other systems. In addition, the system does\udnot require catalyst loading and uses only massproduced\udelectronic and electrical components, thus\udreducing the cost of the after-treatment package.\udPurpose built exhaust gas simulation test rigs were used\udto evaluate, develop and optimise the autoselective\udregeneration system. On-engine testing demonstrated\udthe performance of the autoselective regeneration\udprocess under real engine conditions. Typical\udregeneration performance is presented and discussed\udwith the aid of visual observations, particulate mass\udmeasurements, back pressure measurements and\udenergy consumption. The research demonstrates the\udpotential of the novel autoselective method for diesel\udparticulate filter regeneration. The autoselective process\uddoes not require an exhaust by-pass and enables the\udsystem to be low power, catalyst-free and exhaust\udtemperature independent
