Carbonation of the bottom ashes resulting from the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSWI) is the main chemical reaction occurring during their weathering. In real conditions, MSWI weathering consists in a several months storage under atmospheric conditions. The carbonation of portlandite (Ca(OH)2) which is the major calcium compounds permit to reduce the soluble fraction and the pH of the aqueous solutions in contact with material. As a matter of fact, solubility of certain heavy metals (Pb, Zn…) is reduced and the risk of their mobilization is also reduced.The aim of the study is to quantify bottom ashes carbonation, by characterizing volumes of carbon dioxide likely to react with the solid. A lab-scale pilot was used. It was essentially composed by a metallic cylinder which contains approximately 10 dm3 of MSWI, which can be swept by a pure CO2 flow. Gas temperature was measured at 5 points. As a matter of fact, carbonation reaction is exothermic and temperature evolutions permit to obtain thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of this reaction. Heat transfers in pilot were modelled to obtain these characteristics.Results obtained permit to confirm the role of portlandite. Inside the pilot, the carbonation progress according to an ascending face current. So that temperature increase very quickly and then decrease slowly controlled by conduction La carbonatation des mâchefers d’incinération des ordures ménagères (MIOM) est la principale réaction chimique qui concourt à leur stabilisation lors de leur maturation. Dans les conditions réelles, les mâchefers sont entreposés et soumis aux conditions atmosphériques pendant des durées pouvant atteindre plusieurs mois. La carbonatation de la portlandite, composé majeur des mâchefers, joue notamment un rôle important, en réduisant la fraction soluble et en induisant un abaissement du pH des solutions aqueuses en contact avec le matériau. Un résultat bénéfique est alors la diminution des solubilités de certains métaux lourds (Pb, Zn…) et la réduction du risque de leur mobilisation, ce qui permet la valorisation des MIOM en travaux publics.L’objectif de l’étude est de quantifier à l’échelle pilote la réaction de carbonatation des mâchefers, en caractérisant les volumes de gaz carbonique susceptibles de réagir avec le solide, et en mettant en évidence les différents paramètres pouvant influencer ce phénomène de carbonatation. Le dispositif expérimental est constitué d’un cylindre contenant environ 10 dm3 de MIOM et pouvant être balayé par un courant de CO2 pur. Cinq thermocouples permettent de suivre les températures du gaz à différents niveaux et à la sortie de pilote. En effet, la réaction de carbonatation est exothermique et la donnée des variations des températures peut permettre d’identifier les caractéristiques thermodynamiques et cinétiques de cette réaction, dans les différentes conditions expérimentales du pilote. Cette démarche nécessite le développement d’un modèle thermique du procédé. Les résultats obtenus permettent de confirmer le rôle prépondérant de la carbonatation de la portlandite. Le front de carbonatation qui progresse dans le pilote entraîne une montée brutale de la température, suivie par un refroidissement contrôlé par la conduction.La méthodologie ainsi mise en oeuvre peut permettre de caractériser le potentiel de « carbonatabilité » d’un MIOM, paramètre utile pour la maîtrise du procédé de maturation mis en œuvre sur le terrain.
