Neonatal hypertyrosinemia (NT) is the most prevalent disorder of amino acid metabo­ lism in man. The incidence of NT is 1 o-20 times higher in the Inuit population of the Eastern arctic compared to Caucasian controls. Gestational immatu­ rity, tyrosine overload and ascor­ bate insufficiency, the usual causes of NT, do not explain it in the Inuit and no cause bas yet been found. We classify Inuit NT as a metabolic polymor­ phism of possible climatic adap­ tive value. Blood tyrosine and thyroxine (T 4) levels are negati­ vely correlated in the newborn (table). The correlation is less in the Inuit than in the Caucasian newborn. NT may have adaptive significance for T 4 homeostasis and thermogenesis in the Inuit.
