This study reports on more than 7 years long experience concerning in vitro fertilization (IVF) connected with oocyte donation (OD), essentially based on personnalized anonymity. It took place within the context of the recently published French law on bioethics which permits oocyte donation in certain conditions, after many years of discussion on the legality of this procedure. From February 1987 until May 1994, 304 couples participated in our program of IVF plus OD (228 patients without functionning ovaries, 76 with functionning ovaries). During this period, 263 transfers were performed, 186 cycles were synchronized and 77 were necessitated freezing-thawing of embryos. six hundred and ninety nine embryos were tranferred, 93 biochemical pregnancies, 67 clinical and 54 ongoing pregnancies were obtained. Forty three of them concerned singletons, 10 twins and 1 quadruple pregnancy that was reduced to two embryos. The rate of developing embryos per transfer, and per transferred embryo was 25.5% and 11% respectively. On May 31st 1994, 49 living children had been born. These data obtained with a simultaneous psychological follow-up shows the excellent results of our practice of oocyte donation which not only concerns the number of ongoing pregnancies but also the relations between the different partners. Also they correspond to the ethical recommendations; its principle is esentially within the context of the law recently adopted in our country
