In our medical center, we have "The Assessment Clinic", providing multi-disciplinary evaluation for the developmentally delayed children. Orthoptists perform ophthalmic screening in this clinic , while other discipline; physicians, nurses, speech therapists, clinical psychologists, and occupational therapists, provide their own developmental evaluation. In this study we examined the results of the developmental evaluation and the results of detailed ophthalmic examination. The subjects were 54 patients, who visited the assessment clinic between April 2001 and July 2001. Twenty nine patients were diagnosed as Autism or other Pervasive Developmental Disorders with Mental Retardation; 12 (22.2%) patients as Mental Retardation; 8 (14.8%), patients, as Pervasive Developmental Disorders; 2 (3.7%) patients as Psychomotor Retardation and 3 (5.6%) patients as other disorders. Among all cases, 6 patients required a further ophthalmic examination (11.1%). •áthree patients with misalignment of the eyes (two with exotropia and one with esotropia); three patients with refractive error (one with hyperopia, two with myopia, and one with a myopic astigmatism); one patient with another disease.•â In this clinic, we could carry out a comprehensive multi-disciplinary evaluation for the cases whom it was difficult to evaluate regionally. We could make recommendations for further evaluation and treatment in order to facilitate the patient's development. We were able to screen out the six children with ophthalmic problems and refer them to Opththalmologists. Since ophthalmic functions contribute children's cognitive development, intervention in ophthalmic problem must be necessary for these children's development. The orthoptists participation in this multi-disciplinary clinic for ophthalmic screening is effective and important.
