We studied postoperative visual function and subjective satisfaction in daily life with the refractive multifocal intraocular lens (Array(R) PA154N) after phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. Forty eyes of 20 patients were enrolled in this study. Far visual acuity, near visual acuity, binocular visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity were measured. Questionnaires were also given for evaluation of the subjective satisfaction in daily life. The uncorrected far visual acuities over 0.7 were found in 72% of the eyes. The binocular uncorrected visual acuity over 0.7 were found in 100% of the patients. On the other hand, 30% of the eyes achieved their uncorreCted near visual acuities over 0.4. Fifty five percent of patients regularly use their near glasses and 70% of the patients wear their near glasses on some occasion. 85% of the patients could read the newspaper without glasses even if they had their near glasses. No complaints of visual disturbance in daily life was found in 90% of the patients. Although the visual acuity tests showed only a small difference between the multifocal intraocular lens and the unifocal intraocular lens; patients still depended on their near glasses in some way. However, most patients were satisfied with their quality of vision in their daily lives.
