The Japanese School Hygiene Law was amended in 1978 so as to require a screening test for color vision defectives be given students in the first and fourth grades of elementary school . However, a small number of ophthalmologists and some of their supporters , who think that color vision test in school is unnecessary, have insistently sought to have this law abolished. Reseaerchers of color vision defects, including the author, and most ophthalmologists in Japan have aligned themselves against this proposal. Some color vision defective children, especially those with severe defects, may make mistakes in color discrimination and be at a disadvantage in daily life , if their parents as well as teachers do not know of their defective color vision. Although the Japanese Ministry of Education amended the law so that the screening test is performed once in the fourth grade of elementary school, I stress the need to have the test performed on the first grade pupils.
