Purpose: By assessing the reading ability of children with hyperopia, we investigated the influence of age and the period after a recovery from amblyopia on the reading ability. Subjects and Methods: Subjects were 110 pediatric patients (age range, 6-12 years) with hyperopia in both eyes from the Nishikasai Inouye Pediatric Eye Clinic. At the time of the investigation, all the subjects had good corrected visual acuity and binocular function and no anisometropia. To be close to the subjectsʼ daily viewing conditions, the subjects were tested with both eyes open and corrected ametropia. Using a reading chart in the Japanese Hirakana alphabet, MNREAD-Jk, their reading ability was assessed by three parameters: the maximum reading speed, critical print size, and reading acuity. Correlations of these three parameters with age and/or the period after recovery were investigated. Results: Age showed a significant correlation (p<0.01) with the maximum reading speed but not with the other two parameters. As the period after recovery became longer, the maximum reading speed also increased. Furthermore, a multiple regression analysis indicated that age was a bigger factor than the period after recovery although both had contributed. Conclusion: Our results showed that the reading ability of children with hyperopia was affected by both age and the period after recovering from amblyopia. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment for amblyopia was again confirmed.
