The stem bark of Enantia chlorantha is commonly\udused for the treatment of malaria and other ailments\udof the human body such as cough and wound. The\udplant had been intensely studied for its antimicrobial\udactivities and antipyretic properties. However, the\udefficacy and mechanisms of action of the plant remain\udunclear. Therefore, the objective of the present study\udwas to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity of\udthe various solvent extracts from stem bark of Enantia\udchlorantha. In vitro antioxidant activity of certain\udextracts of stem bark of Enantia chlorantha such as\udmethanol extract (ME), n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate,\udand aqueous fractions (HF, CF, EF and AF\udrespectively) was evaluated using models of DPPH\udradical scavenging activity, ferric reducing property\ud(FRAP), nitric oxide scavenging activity, hydroxyl\udradical scavenging activity. The inhibition of lipid\udoxidation, total flavonoids and phenolic contents of\udthe extracts were also determined using spectrophotometric\udmethods. The result revealed the highest\udphenolic and flavonoid contents in the methanol extract\udfollowed by AF, EF and CF while HF contained\udthe least concentration. Free radical scavenging potentials\udof the extracts were found to be proportional\udto their respective phenolic and flavonoid contents.\udOur results suggest that part of the mechanisms\udthrough which the plant is used in folk medicine for\udthe treatment of stress related diseases such as malaria,\udand cough and wound may be through its antioxidant\udactivity, DPPH, nitric oxide , hydroxyl radical\udscavenging abilities and reducing power
