The so-called photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collectors, sometimes known as hybrid modules or PVT modules can improve the performance of the PV part due to the cooling of the PV cells. The design and development of a new PV/T, photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar systems are being carried out at the IRcCOS S.c.a r.l. Research and certification Institute for Sustainable Construction. One innovative low cost proto-type PVT water collector, was tested at the experimental site in Milan (Italy). Two different PVT solutions using a radiant pipe system with a liquid heat-transfer medium to cool photovoltaic cells were compared with an identical PV module without the heat transfer system. To improve module design and to check their thermal behavior under real operating conditions, for typical domestic hot-water systems, one test-stand for hybrid PVT systems has been used. The new stand test was used in order to know overall performance of the modules. The characteristics of two different collector types are here described by the authors. Thermal and electric efficiencies have been assessed during some days of experimentation. The present paper shows the results of such tests and focus on the relationships among collector performances and design conditions of the new PVT solution.
