A relationship between the occurrence of leaf yellowing of barley (Sanuki—hadaka) and its yield was investigated. There was a linear, negative correlation (P<0.01) between the degree of leaf yellowing and the yield. No correlation bewteen the degree of mosaic on leaves caused by stripe virus and the yield was found. There was, however, a linear negative correlation (P<0.01) between the degree of root browning, which is closely related to browning root rot, and the yield regardless of the occurrence of yellow mosaic.A close correlation between root browning and the yield suggested that leaf yellowing might be closely related to browning root rot caused by Pythium spp. Shortening of the ear length was considered to be the most important factor involved in yield loss, based on the analyses of yield componentsand leaf yellowing.
