The apparent contact potential difference (CPD) of powders in an alcohol vapor atmosphere was measured and compared with that obtained in a normal atmosphere. The powders used are the ferrite carrier particles coated with resin; fluorine-contained acrylic silicone, silicone, or alkylmelamine. Silicone resin particles with different degree of curing were prepared by changing the curing temperature. The apparent CPD in an alcohol vapor atmosphere reached steady state value faster than in a normal atmosphere. This fact suggests that the electric charge of a powder-layer discharges during exposure to alcohol vapor. The CPD in a normal atmosphere after exposing it to ethanol vapor for the necessary time gives the same value as that obtained in a normal atmosphere, and the measuring time of the CPD was reduced. It was found that the time constant of charge relaxation in an alcohol vapor atmosphere decreased as the vapor pressure of alcohol increased. There was good correlation between the degree of curing of silicone resin and the time constant of charge relaxation in an alcohol vapor atmosphere.
