A study was conducted to improve the characteristics of anodic coatings on aluminum by the pulse current with negative current component. Anodic oxidation was carried out in a bath of 15 wt % H2SO4, the reversing cycle was set at 13.3Hz and duty factors was varied from 76 to 100%.It was found that the hardness, coating ratio and thickness of coatings were improved dramatically by the pulse current with negative current component at duty factors of 86-95%. Uniform coatings were obtained at higher temperatures (around 30°C) and it was found that anodizing coatings grew at a higher rate at current densities of 2-6A/dm2. The cells of coatings obtained by the pulse current with negative current component were uniform and small in size.
